TRAVEL - Japan: Finding ARASHI!

Japan isn't just the land of Totoro and matcha but of.... *drumrolls* the boy band, Arashi.

Well, given their status (fifteen years since debut and they are still as famous as ever), meeting them at random and/or getting to score a ticket (when you are not a Japanese native) to one of their shows is almost impossible. But going to Japan and taking pictures of every Arashi promo/stuff that we see is very much possible. And so, we took the chance to do it!

READY?

Here we go!

Touchdown! We're greeted at the airport!

At a Lawson convenience store at the Kansai International Airport

A store in Shibuya!

Shibuya is Arashi heaven.

We see what you've been hiding in there!

Seen at the stairs! ha

You are my SOUL! SOUL!

We've been looking for you everywhere

In our defense, we did not see the "Don't take pictures" sign on some of the places that we've been to (especially in the Shibuya stretch) before taking them. *facepalm*

MATCHA-dventures in Japan!

Documenting the whole Japan trip in one single blog post will take so many characters and be so awful long and since I cannot get to summarizing everything yet (still reeling from the fact that one of our dream travels has actually happened), I decided to put it up bit by bit. This post  is especially all about my favourite food to consume in the world: MATCHA!

Matcha is made by grinding young tea leaves and is said to have more nutrients as you are having the tea leaves instead of having just the extracts from its leaves (from a normal green tea). It is packed with antioxidants, boosts metabolism and burns calories. Matcha also:

(1) Enhances mood and aids in concentration
(2) Calms the mind and relaxes the body
(3) Prevents disease
(4) Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar

So much for an introduction. Not everyone is into it but as you may all know by now, I love it and I love trying varieties from matcha drinks to cookies, muffins, and weird dishes (pasta, tonkatsu, etc). You could check my Twitter thread below for some reference.

And guess what? Japan is where it's originated! *pretends to be shocked*
Not going to miss not to try and hoard them while we are at the land of the rising sun, yes?

YES?

YES!!!!!

And so, here are some of my hoards.

(....and some others that I didn't get to take a photo because I just cannot help but eat all of them.)

Oreo Thins and Chocopie!

Featuring RJ of BT21 (and some cherry and wasabi-flavoured KitKat)

Cookies and Bon Bon!!

A serving of soft ice cream in Kyoto (left)

*drools*

The Meiji sandwich (left) has 51% matcha, I am in heaven. The green tea on the right is really good for your everyday tea consumption, too.

Whoops.

And when matcha is life......

Jon Snowbell!

I'm making up for the long time that I have not been posting with short blurbs like this one (also, while drafting a proper blogpost recap of our Japan trip last month. A filler, kind of). It has been a year since I got my current baby pet cat (last March 3rd) and I think it is but proper to dedicate one for him!

Happy birthday slash anniversary, my baby Jon Snowbell! x

I like cats because they are low maintenance pets, occasionally cuddly, moody but they can generally fend for themselves. Jon is named by apparently a Game of Thrones character. He's got the Bell in his name in reference to my previous baby Ginger Bell (run free, my dearest) whom died of old age in 2016, days before I am scheduled to go back to the home country from a quick stay in Singapore. (The saddest thing.) But I have Jon now so, I'm doing well.

#BetweenUsInManila ~ CNBLUE 2017

Seeing CNBLUE for the very first time caps off my concert enthusiast life on a high note in 2017: it's everything I have ever wanted and more.

And...that fact is what's making it quite surprising that I have procrastinated with this update that it has already overlapped Jung Yonghwa's military enlistment (he's already enlisted last March 5th) but better late than never, right? I am just so glad and I still can't believe that it has happened(!), that I was able to see all them for the first time and probably the last at least for a couple of years since the other three might enlist soon, too. (I look forward to seeing Kang Minhyuk in his Manila fan meet sometime this coming May, though).

I think it is necessary to reiterate how they are one of those few Korean acts that I actually listen to, own merch and physical CDs. It's not that I am not into the Korean music scene because I enjoy listening to anything (I've been listening to BTS because of my mate, too, see), but I guess you could say that I find their music special among others. So many things have happened since I've made a BOICE/CNBLUE appreciation post (you could read it here) and looking back, I could confirm now that they are it for me and I don't regret getting into their music.

So, the concert. It's everything. They've exceeded all expectations and they gave it their all (given that it is also the last stop of the Between Us tour). I was so hyped since they've started the night with Radio that I didn't realise that it was the Korean version and I was singing the Japanese one.

Fun fact: It is actually Radio (and Go Your Way) that has made me decide to give them a listen, which is weird because a good starter would be I'm a Loner or Intuition or Can't Stop but that's just me haha. It's from the Wave album, a Japanese release.

They all have that certain glow, an end of the tour glow, probably and it is so infectious. How to stay fresh like Kang Minhyuk, though? My baby.

I mean, look at him? (I am whipped AF, I know. The maknae line, Minhyuk along with Jungshin makes me suffer the most... but in a good way.)

Seeing them with my friends is also the highlight of the night. (Dianne being one of those whom I know have supported them from the start and she's also one of the reasons why I got kind of hooked) Good music and fangirling is even better when shared, eh? We even went to Gabe Norwood's restaurant prior to watching the concert and that's like hitting two fandoms/faves in one go. Time well spent.

They've also come in so prepared with all their Tagalog banters, and Yonghwa took it to another level: the LODI level.
Only you, Yonghwa. Only you.

With the energy and performance level to match that of Bruno Mars (I am not even exaggerating), they are so good at hyping the crowd up (see Coffee Shop + Cinderella fancam below, credit to the rightful owner, you're a legend!)) but I am most impressed with Royal Rumble. I didn't even like it that much on record but Yonghwa makes it so.... (add whatever good adjective that you could think of, I'm lost for words) when performed live? I don't know, man. I don't know anymore.

And of course, Can't Stop (also one of the favourites)

The Setlist:

Radio (Korean version)
When I Was Young
Domino
I'm Sorry
Can't Stop
It's You
LOVE Girl
Sweet Holiday
Love
Lie
Blind Love (Korean version)
Royal Rumble
In My Head (Korean version)
You're So Fine
Face to Face
Wake Up
Feeling
Coffee Shop
Cinderella
Between Us

Encore:
Catch Me
Manito
Young Forever

If there's anything that I'd want more, it's hearing Yonghwa sing some from his solo albums (I have the CD, too and Cruel Memories is my favourite) but things happened leading to his enlistment before I even got the chance. It's alright, though. Guess I'll wait for two or more years then.

Have strength today, you’re doing a good job
I hope you’ll smile as you listen to this song
I couldn’t tell you in words
But my heart is going to you

Sometimes, when you’re feeling down, lean on me
I’m just a friend to you but
Do you know?
To me, you’re already my girl

My love, stop and turn around
You might get surprised
But it was hard for me
I saw you smile and cry
But I couldn’t tell you
As if I was your manito

If you want me to protect you from far away
I’ll do that, but know this
The smiling you, the crying you
The person who loves you the most is me
Please know

Have strength today, you’re doing a good job
Please eat a big breakfast
It’ll get colder at night
So dress in layers

You’re pretty even when you’re tired
So don’t worry and tell me everything
Even if tonight passes
I’ll be with you

My love, stop and turn around
You might get surprised
But it was hard for me
I saw you smile and cry
But I couldn’t tell you
As if I was your manito

If you want me to protect you from far away
I’ll do that, but know this
The smiling you, the crying you
The person who loves you the most is me
Please know
Woo yeah
Oh baby stay with me woo

I love you, I love you
Every day, like this
Tell me love you oh baby
I look at you all the time
And now I can’t hold it in

All the lonely days
You melt away with your eyes
I will go to you and softly kiss you
The smiling you, the crying you
The person who will always protect you is me
Please know...

Archuleta Philippines Gives Back (David Archuleta's 27th Birthday Celebration)

It's that time of the year again where we set a day off our holiday vacation to gather together, give back and celebrate David Archuleta's birthday here in the Philippines. It's been a tradition of sorts for years and still high from the comeback concert that has happened last October (in which you could revisit here), off to party the Archies way we go!

Class picture 2017

The celebration is in two parts: One, is a gift-sharing event in the morning in which the group will visit a chosen charity to share the blessings and happiness and two, the actual get-together party in the afternoon with freebies, fun games and prizes that are up for grabs.

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY!

For this year, the team has decided to go to Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, an orphanage in Manila,   run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Armed with food, games and gifts gathered from donations by the AP Elders and Archies across the country/international Archies, the children and adults definitely had  a half-day of fun!

It was such a nice experience to see them have the best time and to be able to give back. Personally, it is my first time to join in this AP event and I am grateful to be a part of it. Seeing their happy faces as we played some games has definitely lifted the mood from the busy side of being an adult (OMG). Some Archies even went straight from work/had little rest prior to the event and that inspiration drives you to be better and be more compassionate towards people, also to be more appreciative of the life that you have. Not everyone has been lucky and they may have experienced hardships but we could help lift each others spirits up and that's a nice thing.

ARCHU-PARTYING TIME!

Part two is more of a fun bonding among the Archies, endless recollection of the morning shenanigans and catching up with each others' lives filled with laughter, games, inside jokes and a whole lot of chaos (the good kind).

Your girl is a Wordscapes' champion and got herself some rad prints from David's Manila show (with lyrics from his latest record, Postcards in the Sky). YAAAAAAS!

Plus one point for singing while writing with the song Invincible as the timer.

My hoards! Definitely loving the PCITS lootbag (it contains a David emoji 2018 calendar, a Begin poster, a customised notebook and ref magnet) Thank you po!

Others have won signed CD's, awesome photo prints and copies of magazines, too. It's a flood of good food and archu-stuff!

This will definitely not be the last as we plan to see more of each other in the future (with David in tow, who knows....) See you all in our future projects/get together!

Jayjay Helterbrand, One Last Ride

It still has not fully sank in, no wonder I have not been blogging about my Jayjay Helterbrand retiring from the league after playing for seventeen years. It feels like something that you have seen coming, but nothing can prepare you emotionally when it's finally came.

What a ride.

It's not until Mark Caguioa, his best friend-slash-on-court-partner has posted about using the number 13 jersey as a tribute that it felt like..... okay, this is really happening.

I realised I have been supporting him half my life and watching basketball will never be the same now. Even when he's met with couple of injuries and had to sit down for most of the time, it still feels different because this time, even when he's recovered and healthy, I have nothing/ no one to look forward to as he has already retired. It's also all I ever write about before; compiling and transcribing his old interviews, news articles and such, up to tribute poems (cringes haha I am definitely so whipped).

However, I'd like to focus on the good things instead of sulking so here it goes. (I believe the fan girl in me has mellowed in time and it is for the better.)

He's that crush who's making me freeze like the Harry Potter to Ginny Weasley in the second Harry Potter film (I wish I was kidding but it has happened). He still can make me blush at the same time he can make me scream my lungs out cheering for him as he goes up and down the court and hitting those glorious three-pointers and drives.

His career has been one of the most celebrated and I am way too proud to be called one of his fans.

Above all, knowing God is probably his best achievement to date. I am glad to know him through his party-ing days up to the Man of Faith that he is now. He's inspired me more than one can ever imagine and I am glad that I chose to support someone like him.

While there will never be another Jayjay Helterbrand, he's taught me so much and I'll probably pass this Ginebra loyalty up to my future children and grand kids. I just love him so much.

Thank you, Jay. For the inspiration, for inculcating the never say die attitude in me. For not giving up. For reminding me that God knows what's best and He's to shower us with goodness and He'll give the desires of our hearts in His own time.

Thank you, Jayjay Helterbrand. You've worked so hard and now...

It's time.

Happy retirement, love.

See you around. x

Unnecessary additional note: My Instagram handle is actually a word play of one of his famous monickers, "Helter-skelter". (My IG handle is aprilskelter). Which reminds me, I am glad he's active on that social media account of his that I am not missing him too much.

Season's Greetings!

Like any other relationship, friendship needs effort for it to be able to work. I am glad to have these unique individuals who, you could be at ease with and  trust with all your quirks and collectively allows you to be your most real self.

It's not every day that we can make our schedules meet so we basically make the best out of the time that we have. Also, we try to make it more fun and memorable each year.

We've all been notorious when it comes to theme parties. We always came up with the unexpected yet ridiculous ones. I can still remember when we had a Protege-inspired one where we just sing our hearts out (nothing out of the usual). Some concepts are also just very random like when we decide to (kind of) cover Katy Perry's Roar and bam! It became a thing. We went real hard last year when we did a zoofari party, with the costumes, photoshoots and games (made possible by the group's hermano for the year, Lee Jordan). Competitive sides were shown and it has been a good two-day bonding time away from the stress of the city. Plus we had a real good time with our unique gift-giving.

We call our circle The Gryffs, apparently Harry Potter-inspired because I can be very persuasive, they are fans, too and we tolerate each other's shenanigans most of the time.

Speaking of tolerating each other, Freda has been on a K-Pop high since accompanying her niece Poela to watch BTS on their Wings Tour in Manila and so we had this last minute BTS-themed party. Originally, the theme was just to wear a color that starts with the same letter as your name (which has also showed our creative/resourceful side, to be honest as this was discussed only a day before the actual party):

Maco - Mysty Pink, Maroon, Magnolia
April - Amaranth, Amber, Ash
Marc Kenon - Mint Green
Elaiza - Electric Yellow
Clarissa Andrea - Chartreuse Green, Coal Black
Joejarie - Jungle Green
Roy - Royal Blue

But then we are seven (BTS is, too) and so WHY NOT?

Here we are. Gryffs as BTS. Or at least, we tried to be.

Gryffs as BTS! (Almost nailed it. Ha)
Left to right: Jungkook, Taehyung, Seokjin, Jimin, Yoongi, Namjoon, Hoseok

It also came in handy that we share a bit of the member's personality/trait that it's easy to be in character except for me and Freda because we chose our faves beforehand but it still fit as we apparently have chosen those members who are from the same origin (Daegu) and then just picked whose member relates to the other five the best.

Freda (Maco) is Suga / Min Yoongi as she is sweet like sugar. Ha!
Georgia (me) is V / Kim Taehyung, with our love for art and visuals.
Suga / V

Freda / Georgia

Dean Thomas (Kenon) is J-Hope / Jung Hoseok as he is the best dancer.
Parvati (Elai) is RM / Kim Namjoon as she is the best rapper (apparently, from our previously held party) and she's the leader who has taken charge for next year's. The biggest one yet (fingers crossed).
Everybody likes Ginny (Andrea) which is fitting for her to be Park Jimin.

Namjiseok.

Hagrid (Roy) is Jeon Jungkook as he is our best singer.
Lastly. Lee Jordan as the worldwide handsome, Kim Seokjin. Because.

Jinkook.

This is them now. Feel old yet? ;)

I have like a ton of blog updates to post (Jayjay Helterbrand's retirement that is still yet to sink in, CNBLUE's Between Us in Manila recap, matcha-dventure, life updates in general) but I cannot seem to finish them as December is really eventful with the looming holidays that are best spent with loved ones and really, it's been quite a busy couple of days at work, not that I am complaining. Hopefully I could get them up before the year ends but if I happen to slack, let's just say I had fun "living"and experiencing life and I am forever grateful for the year that it has been. While it isn't all great and there's still anxiety creeping in the most unexpected times, we live for the good times/moments and that's what I'd like to focus on.

I wish the same for yours. I pray that you're living the life that you always wanted, or at least on your way to achieving your dreams. I pray that you've found the people that you'd like to keep along the way. I pray for peace and contentment in your heart. I pray for an even better 2018 ahead.

Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. (Hebrews 10:24)

NAILED IT.

Merry Christmas!
Cheers! x
