Until Victory

There have been a lot of black propaganda against me, most recently in the recent months that
I have withdrawn because of my cancer.
I have already shown you that I am what I am now.
I am what I was today, and what I will be tomorrow.
We are not looking for an ordinary leader, or an ordinary manager or administrator.
We are looking for the president of the Philippines.
So, I think that the first qualification should be international stature
That would be a great help to Philippine foreign and domestic policy.
But most importantly, I repeat, there are three qualifications to become a president:
academic excellence –
ako may doctorate ako in juridical science from America. Tsaka valedictorian ako sa lahat ng klase ko. Hindi naman pwede na yung mga naupo sa likod yun ang magiging presidente ng pilipinas.
 Pangalawa, professional excellence
Binigyan ako ng prestigious Magsaysay Award for Government Service, “for bold and moral leadership in cleaning up a corrupt government agency.” Meron ba silang ganun?
Third, moral excellence
Maliban pa sa dalawang excellences na yon, meron pang moral excellence which is the most important.

Unfortunately there is no machine that you can attach to a human being so that you can tell whether that person is honest or not. Maaaring bolero lang, maaaring magaan ang bibig, maaaring kung ano anong sinasabi basta kung anong unang dumating sa isapan niya.

Kaya pag-isipan niyo mabuti itong ginagawa natin. Nagpipili tayo ng ating maging leader sa loob na sunod na anim na taon. Hindi tayo pwede mamili na base lang sa kursunada or dahil uso doon sa mga gang ninyo or sa mga tribes ninyo sa eskwela.

We are all united in this endeavor to improve and reform the Philippines.
Akala ng iba palaging ganito na lang tayo?
Hindi!
Lalabanan natin itong kurapsyon na naging bunga at sanhi ng ating kahirapan.
We can fight corruption.
I have shown it in immigration commission. I have not allowed my words to overcome my deeds.

At for those who think that I should withdraw because I have once been a cancer patient.
This is what I'll say, I am now normal.
I can think. I can act. And I can pray.
Ngayon, gusto niyo akong mag-urong? Biro mo, ang lakas pati sa radyo, ang sagot ko sa kanila:
I will never quit, I will never stop, I will never withdraw!
We all want to change the world for the better.
But the person who prayed should be emulated.
He said, “God, preserve this country, and begin with me.”
- Miriam Defensor-Santiago, 2016

*****

I don't usually voice out my opinion on politics as it is a very complicated matter and we would all end up debating over so many issues that go with it. That and the bad connotation that politicians in the Philippines actually have (most of them are really like that, though). But I do look up to a few.

I remember voting for Richard Gordon on his bid for the presidency back in 2010. I was the lone believer, at least in our place. He tallied 1 vote all in all from our humble barangay and it was me. He did not win, apparently but the satisfaction of voting for someone who shares the same principles as you do and of whom capabilities are fit for the role of a leader has made my vote not go into waste.

Fast forward to 2016, I am rooting for another underdog candidate though she is not really an underdog considering all of her credentials (of which she's leading by a mile). She may always be on the bottom of the surveys (with criticisms that are mostly because she's been ill with the big C and might die without having to finish the six-year term) but eff that all. She still is, in my honest opinion, more suitable for the presidency than any of the other candidates. I also admire her exuberance and wit at any given situation. Most of all, I like the fact that she is not only about the change that her presidency would bring, but she is more into encouraging people to start the change from within themselves. Should she not win in this election, it would not be her loss but our country's. If only more people could see that.

I am for Miriam. Until victory.

All The Good Things

Walking out and in the clear
Taking in the orange sunrise
Heading that way south of east
Living all my dreams tonight
Riding out into the sunset
Treading this road head up high
Looking way too far ahead and it's all right

Em and I were having a little catching up session over a video call when she asked me, "Are you happy by choice or are you happy because that is how you feel?" This is regarding the new "shift" not only in my career but life as a whole (I am to elaborate on this part today). Happiness is hard to define these days. But I answered that my happiness has something to do  with my nature and personal views on things. When I am with someone, anyone, anywhere despite the circumstances, my initial tendency is to look for anything that makes me happy and focus on it. Everything seemed bearable after that. The "thing" doesn't have to be something big but the hopeful and optimist in me has always managed to rule out every little bad thing and I focus on that little ray of light. Situations are not perfect but that is how my mind usually worked.

So I never really get to share about the life recently, eh? It might have to do something (no, more like it has something to do) with the biggest shift in my life recently.

I am now based in Singapore.

My social media silence (regarding the decision, at least) is because of the following reasons:

  1. It's not like I post about my daily life in the internet, anyway or that my hundreds of Facebook friends would particularly care but I believe these kind of decisions are rather personal. I did try to meet up with a few of my friends to spend time and chill out before I leave the country for good (for now) and of course I had to tell them about it as I look ahead to the years that will be spent away from them: the concerts that I have to miss, the gatherings that I would not be able to participate in the flesh. Pretty hopeful, see. But other than those people, only the family and the closest friends actually knew about the decision.
  2. Nothing about our future in Singapore is certain. We came in Singapore with just enough money on our pockets to be spent for at least two months of job hunting. It was tough as Singapore is also on recession (and the oil and gas industry is down). Should we not able to find our luck then at least we won't have to explain ourselves and just go on with the usual life.

Diving down one whole city deep
Run into your arms wide open
Pulse is racing, I can't sleep
A way of life by chasing moments

The first few weeks are tough. Inasmuch as I am a strong-willed person and how great my support system (family and close friends) is, I realised I don't really take risks. I am okay with my comfort zone. I want to achieve things but I do not know when to take that major leap. I have been asking my friends who's been working overseas, "How did you do it? How would you know when it's time to go and push through with the plan?" and they told me, you'd just know when it's time. The ultimate drive will come. Not exactly helpful, I thought back then. But when I have made my decision, I understood them.

I am in my mid-twenties now (I just turned twenty-five last month) and I felt like my life is heading nowhere. Quarter-life crisis, others may say. I do not have enough savings. I can barely provide for my family when I have been wanting to give them more. I am not progressing as much in my chosen career. I feel lost despite my happy and content bubble and I think about a lot of things. And that is when I  turn to Him for guidance. I went to church almost every other day when my previous job in Manila would allow and I would pray and talk directly to Him. I pray that He'd give me strength to accept all of His plans in His time. I pray for patience, most of all.

No one ever got the right thing, wrong
Taking all the view from where i stand
You are everything I want to learn and more
This is one of them good things i want to last (oh oh)
Moving ahead is easy

It is the beginning of many things; A baby step to something huge and long-term (to Canada in two to three years, if it is His will). I'd like to think I am emotionally ready and with the go signal of my father and my family, I finally did it. I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Weeks have passed, couple of job interviews down and I still don't have a job offer. I almost lost all hope when we experienced mishap at the immigration in Indonesia. At the hotel I was like, "Lord, if this is really for us then let your will be done. Give me the strength to accept Your plans should we fail in our job hunt." We came back to Singapore, refreshed and more motivated.

Today, I have been staying in this country for almost two months. My S-Pass (Visit Permit) card has been delivered and it was exactly a month yesterday since I have started with my new job. and the rest as they say is history.

Take my hand, spread your wings free
Wait no more, just don't ask me why
It's about that time it hurt no one to try
Finally lost my fears of heights

I am grateful for all the help that we've got from our very supportive families and friends in the Philippines and here in Singapore as well. Being with them is like having a home away from home. and the SG stay is fun and bearable so far. I am lucky, more like blessed, to have very kind office colleagues making it easier to somehow adapt with the new job and environment. Dealing with multi-nationals proved to be the toughest part of this new journey but all is well so far.

With the lovely, supportive friends heading to somewhere.
Are we good with all the new things, new things?
I am new to all good things, good things
Loving new and all the new things, new things
Loving new and all the good things, good things

The Jubilee Bridge.

The view from our home away from home.

I like taking pictures of my friends.

Of hassle-free travels.

Went to see papa Merlion. Still got many places to visit and explore but of course. ;)

Casually out at Marina Bay.
Everyday is an opportunity to learn, adapt and explore. Here's to more of life's adventures. And man, am I hyped for the future.

What's Running On My Mind Re: ZAYN's Mind Of Mine (An Album Review OfSorts)

It is the moment every Zquad (yes, that's what his fans are called) on Earth has been waiting for ever since the 29th of July, 2015 when Zayn Malik has signed with RCA Records. And on March 25th 2016, exactly a year since he's officially left One Direction, Zayn's debut record as a solo artist, Mind of Mine is out.

For someone who's never left his side through the ups, downs and controversies, I've never been more proud of the artist that he is now. He has inputs on everything (he is the executive producer of the album) and not only does that feel liberating being unrestricted musically but also fulfilling as he is  finally making the music that  feels real to him and from his roots, hence the title, Mind of Mine (his, for that matter). Of bloody course, I loved it even with that lone fact but here are my other thoughts.

But first, why (stan) ZAYN?

Because he's real. He speaks his mind out no matter what (caused him trouble sometimes, though. Most of the times, actually. Haha). He's got a fair share of controversies (he's not perfect and he's not trying to be) but he's still able to keep private things private. He's the king of promotions (who puts a fake tattoo of his album title on his face, eh? Zayn's wit is just too much sometimes) He's very endearing to his fans and dedicated with his craft. I love the fact that he appreciates fans' efforts with the arts as he is an art lover as well. Also, anyone with ears can attest to the fact that the Bradford jejeboi can really sing. And he's really good at that.

(Also, that fooking face. With every hairstyle that the bastard can definitely pull off because..... RIGHT??)

On a side note, I'm still low-key mad he's left a day before the Manila leg of the On The Road Again tour and I was not able to witness his singing prowess on a live gig. And that is why I am looking forward for him to drop the tour dates and hope that Manila (or Singapore) would be included (and he won't bail on me this time.)

The album cover.

TRACK TITLES:
A photo posted by Zayn Malik (@zayn) on

1. MiNd Of MiNdd (Intro)
Open up and see what's inside my mind....

2. PILLOWTALK
I have recently posted a separate review of sorts and it can be read here.

3. iT’s YoU
This is the first song that he has ever performed on national television via a guesting at Jimmy Fallon's since leaving the group and after the very sexual PILLOWTALK, this is such a great song, and he's instantly connected with me emotionally. There is something about iT's YoU that's making you just tear up. Maybe it's his impressive Raga (a singing style), or the falsetto chorus.... or maybe it's just reminiscent of a failed relationship in general, of giving the person everything and still ended up with nothing.

I won't, I won't, I won't cover the scars
I'll let 'em bleed
So my silence, so my silence won't be mistaken for peace
Am I wrong for wanting us to make it?

4. BeFoUr
“We were sitting backstage in a VIP area and (Zayn) was just telling me, ‘It’s crazy being here in Vegas. I’ve literally been all over the world with One Direction. I’ve done this before, but not like this. Not by myself, not this way, not here with the intention of working on my own music,' I was like, ‘Wait a minute — “I’ve done this before, but not like this” — that’s a song, man.’” So we went into the studio that night and started creating the track. He was in the booth singing melodies and we just stuck with those lyrics, and that was the foundation. We took it back to L.A. and did some more writing and working on it but the song was literally almost done when we left Vegas that night.” -Malay Ho, (producer) on BeFoUr

Laidback Bradford feels, you all.

5. sHe
sHe is one of my favourites. It has a very simple but catchy sound. Even the lyrics are quite easy on the ears, also easy to grasp. It is the honesty and the straightforwardness that I really like in this song. The line "Bright lights, she's fading." really got me. Dang, the boy really fell out of love.  It's something that you would not mind putting on a loop. It's a really good tune. And the high notes... DANG. His dope vocal ability is already a given but he never fails to surprise me.

6. dRuNk
dRuNk should be the song for the summer! It really stood out, in my opinion and could be a potential hit commercially. It gives me an old school Usher vibes and somehow, at the back of my mind, if songs like this one are what I am going to get from ZAYN leaving One Direction then I believe that leaving is probably the best decision that he's ever made. RnB is really his thing.

7. INTERMISSION: fLoWer
He is very proud of his Pakistani roots and it is showing with this song which lyrics are in Urdu (ZAYN's second language). It's impressive.

Translation: "Until the flower of this love has blossomed, this heart won’t be at peace / Give me your heart / Give me your heart / Give me your heart..."

8. rEaR vIeW
What I love about the most on most of the tracks on this album is their straightforwardness and sincerity. It's overflowing. It felt like ZAYN's explaining the year that it has been through his music. rEaR vIeW is one of those lyrically strong tracks.

Please don't wait, I'm not coming home tonight / I wanna love you but I can't. (I feel sorry for this girl lol but yeah)

"I never doubted myself but I doubted you / I'm tired of looking at myself in my rear view."

9. wRoNg featuring Kehlani
THIS COLLABORATION IS JUST. Brilliant. Overtly sexual but nonetheless brilliant. Kehlani is a gem and I look forward for more. (I am trying not to sound too Zayn-biased but I loved the album way too much)

10. fOoL fOr YoU
A freaking ballad. ZAYN definitely wants us all dead. It is said that this song is inspired by John Lennon and the song "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" making me a fool for ZAYN (mind the pun) and love it even more.

11. BoRdErZ
This song and its beat grows on you as it progresses. And the lyrics is about knowing the border, the end line and guarding your own heart to prevent further damages and consequences (or that's what I thought it is).

12. tRuTh
Spill the tea, Zayn. And man, did he.

"That [authenticity] was something that was always underlying, and ended up as the main factor of me leaving in the end. It was about denying the authenticity of who I was, and what I enjoyed about music, and why I got into it. That was always there. It was one of the things that wasn’t going to go away, so I had to go away." - ZAYN on his journey towards being a solo artist

13. lUcOzAdE
One of my faves! His singing style (and the pace like he's high on weed and Lucozade lol) in this one is really impressive (I am running out of adjectives).

14. TiO
Sexy as heck. It's catchy and... provocative. It makes you want to take it (all) off....basically.

DELUXE BONUS TRACKS:
15. BLUE
Regret and romance with falsetto and piano, what a killer combo! It's one of those reserved moments in the album that you just would want to sit back and appreciate ZAYN's musical ability.

16. BRIGHT
BRIGHT is heavy on bass and I am a total sucker for these kinds. Also, the song felt like after every sorrow and pain he's found the light again, found his place and moved forward with his (love) life.

17. LIKE I WOULD
Cannot help but dance with LIKE I WOULD. He's zlaying. Come on, Zayn. Drop the tour dates already.

18. SHE DON'T LOVE ME
Soulful. Melodic. Straightforward.

TARGET/JAPAN BONUS TRACKS:
19. Do Something Good
SICK REGGAE BEATS! Just when you thought ZAYN's done, he goes right there to impress you. This one reminded me so much of the random John Lennon-penned Beatles' songs for many odd reasons. I love it.

20. Golden
Maybe it's just me but it felt like he's addressing One Direction in Golden. The good times that they have shared and the love and gratitude, even through the tough times. I miss Zouis (PLEASE MAKE UP, YOU GUYS). It is also nice to learn that Zayn and Liam are still in contact with each other. Who knows, time heals wounds, right? We'll see.

The choices we make change the path that we take
But I know
That somewhere out there there's a path that we chose
There's a life that we share, there's a love and it grows

FINAL VERDICT: 8.5 out of 10 stars
I am buzzing and I cannot wait for his tour to start. I am not angry anymore, babe. Come home. (Hahaha) But, really, Proud of you, ZAYN!

I AM

It has been an eventful past few weeks and I am nothing but grateful. A blog update is fitting but I could not find the words yet (too many of which I do not know where to start but I will fill you in in the coming days). But here's to the future and to God's overflowing love.

Throwback Hit: Woman by John Lennon

I was having a rather laid back Sunday and was browsing Spotify (who would have thought I would be sort of hooked with this application) for some late night tunes when I came upon this playlist which features the hits of the legendary John Lennon, also known as my favourite Beatle. His solo works along with all the records of The Beatles were recently remastered for digital release and online streaming purposes much to this girl's delight.

DAY 12: A Book You Love and Hate at the Same Time

"I enjoy reading books like that because it's not at all the life I lead.
It's completely different than any situation I'll ever be in. But I get entertainment out of it."

***

So... It took me forever to actually do an update for the 30-Day Book Challenge but here it is! The book that I love and sort of hate at the moment is... *drum rolls* Colleen Hoover's November 9.

NEW SONG ALERT: Figure Me Out by The Summer Set

Brian Dales and the rest of The Summer Set always write the most honest lyrics making their songs not only catchy when it comes to its beat and melody but scars listeners, too in a good way with its relatable (sometimes, inspirational) lines about love, sex and life. After releasing Legendary a few years back, they are definitely back with a bang with a new single and an album, Stories For Monday that will be out very soon (April 1st).

It was recently revealed in an interview how the band is on the verge of calling it quits, but I personally/selfishly hope that this is not the end for them yet. Here's their comeback (sort of, because it has been a while, yes?) single, Figure Me Out.

What's Inside....
