The Summer Playlist 2017

Cheers to the summer!

NEW SONG ALERT: Bad Behavior / black butterflies and déjà vu by The Maine

I haven't been blogging for quite a time so I am giving you a combo of awesome new releases from one of the most genuine bands in the biz: The Maine. They are also probably the nicest in meet and greets. Their music makes you think. They make you feel. Underrated band as they may seem, but they are here all for the love of music.

I already have scored a ticket for their headlining show this coming August as they come back to Manila for Bazooka Rocks 5 (A music festival). It still a couple of months away so for the mean time, here are two of their latest singles off the new album which is going to be called Lovely Little Lonely, dedicated to all those who's helped them be heard.

MAKE THE WORLD EMO AGAIN! Can hardly wait for the release of the album in April!

Don't Worry, Be Happy - Before You Exit in Manila 2017

Before You Exit may have previously performed plenty of times here in Manila already but there is always going to be that one that will be more special than the other and this leg of the Asian tour may be it for me. Probably because I am totally digging the songs from their latest EP, All The Lights and I am buzzing to hear them perform its entirety live. Also, because I was able to "meet" and greet (and hug and talk albeit quite short) them. It was definitely an awesome time.

After a week of extreme PCD-ing (despite the ruckus that is day job / life), let us relive the awesome night, shall we?

Opening the solo show with all the lights (mind the pun) and the single When I'm Gone, the crowd just went crazy (we sure did) welcoming the three brothers with cheers and fangirl screams.

Connor, Riley and Toby are finally back home.

One of my favourite things about attending certain concerts and/or music festival is meeting the Other Kids. Got to love spending time catching up with the old but gold friends and creating memories with the new ones. We share a bond, a commonality despite the differences and that is what making it extra special. Love for music unites people of difference races, beliefs, gender and ages.

They proceeded to belt out the good ol' ones: Dangerous, Settle For Less, and a snippet of Three Perfect Days and I kind of wished for them to sing End of the World and would have volunteered to do the rap part (just kidding) if it means getting to hear them sing it but no such luck. ANYWAY. The old hits are immediately followed by Radiate which is my favourite song from the EP (though it's tough to even actually choose just one) and oh, the joy. They performed Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud as well, the first cover song of the night.

Why Kuya Connor (kuya?) is emotional during Soldier that he was not able to sing his solo is beyond me. But looking at how many lives have been inspired by the message that Soldier is conveying, I figured I should not be surprised at all.

Taking a short break in transition to the slower, emotionally-charged part of the show, they opted to play an audio of Clouds instead of performing it and I can see why. It has been months since they have lost a friend in Christina Grimmie and it will take sometime to recover from that. Clouds is a thing of beauty and it makes you kind of tear up and feel so much longing and pain from the unfortunate incident leading to her death. But there is this hope that one day (it will happen but not so soon, alright) that we will all meet up in the clouds.

No one I knew stood

Half as bright as you

But now you shine on
The perfect avenue

And the light that you left it helps me to see
A way through all the bitterness
A way to who I really want to be
Oh, light up the streets, oh

Please just tell me you're alright
Are you way up in the sky
Laughing, smiling, looking down
Saying "one day we'll meet in the clouds"
Up in the clouds.

Suitcase came in next and yes, take us all in your suitcases, boys! The single is well-loved.

I Won't Stop is when they got me all #shookt, making us dance up and down and just appreciate pure talent. I particularly loved Riley's banter reminding the crowd that if ever there are people who are telling them that they can't do (and achieve) something, don't believe them because you can, and you should not stop (living and chasing your dreams).

They kept the tempo up with another cover song and this time it's Don't Wanna Know by Maroon 5.

If anyone needs to be reminded of why Wiley the Wabbit is my favourite among the three (I adore you, too, Connor and Toby but...riiight?), here you go. Also, Connor playing instruments is always a treat as he is a perfectionist (I think) and very talented (I am probably overusing the word in this post but, really).

Seeing them made me feel five years younger!

Capping off the memorable night, they sang I Like That and Model.

I have only ever filed a half day work leave for three acts: David Cook (for his CD signing), One OK Rock's concert just last year and this year, BYE and all of them are worth it. We all needed that break sometimes.

Team Tameme. Of course, took that chance to be pictured beside my favourite McDonough boy. ;)

I look forward to their full album hopefully to be released in the next couple of months. Everything looks promising especially since they are signed with RCA and with the talent, the passion and hardwork (the perfect combination), it's just the start of the greater things that are ahead. It's nice to somehow be a part of the process of them finding their own sound, maturing as puberty hits them like a truck and as they grow and aim to be the best and come up with the best that they can offer to the loving supporters every single time.

Highlights of the night in photos.

If all else fails, though, Manila will always welcome you home, boys.

'Til you come back home.

PS: Oh, and friends, if you miss them you could always just...

Gift Ideas and Flatlay 101

We may be past the celebratory holiday season already but I still am on a holiday high as we recently had our annual Gryffs party (which usually takes place on the Chinese new year weekend) and Joe, the person-in-charge for the programme and all that jazz for this year has introduced a refreshing twist for the exchanging of gifts.

The rule is pretty simple (yet complicated):

1. Every person is asked to spell out and assign a person to the first six letters of their name (omit the repeating letters, e.g. for my name April Ann, I used APRILN.)
2. You will be using the letter that has been assigned to you by a person as the first letter of the gift that you will be giving them come the party. Each gifts should cost at least 200php.
3. The kind of complicated part (it  vary to some if you are going to adopt this gift-giving twist): If you have been assigned to multiple A's then you will have to combine them as one and create decoys (gifts with no content) for the other. For example, I got three A's and so I will just have to buy a 600php worth of gift and leave two (A) dummy gifts.

As for the biggest twist which was revealed to us the last minute, the 600php worth of gift was given to our special guest friend that night and the other two 400php gifts were given to the winners of the different challenge and activities that we had.

4. Do Pinoy Henyo to guess the gifts that you will be receiving for extra fun.

We've been fans of The Soshal Network and this calls for some serious flatlaying techniques (as was previously shared on their hilarious and witty site). And so here goes our party hauls.

Each of us has received five awesome, quirky gifts and here's where we kind of get to show our creative thinking with all the gifts the we have acquired and given. I also loved the fact that we were able to choose the gifts based on each others personalities (my art/book set!!). We knew each other that well, I guess. YAY to our eight years of friendship and here's to more years! (And travels!)

30-Day Music Challenge

I have just wrapped up a Music Challenge on Twitter and it's just so cool to list out some of my favourites. I tried to pick songs from different artists/musicians so as to come up with a diverse list (or you would just probably see mostly David Archuleta or Sara Bareilles, The Beatles, Zayn or Panic at the Disco in here if I didn't). My Book challenge on the blog is still on-going, though, but here goes my song choices for the mean time.

Day 1: A song you like with a color in the title
Red - Sara Bareilles

Day 2: A song you like with a number in the title
69 - One OK Rock

Day 3: A song that reminds you of summertime
March Into The Sun - Echosmith

Day 4: A song that reminds you of someone you would rather forget about
Anodyne - MWK

Day 5: A song that needs to be played LOUD
Golden Days - Panic! At The Disco

Or anything from Panic! at the Disco, really.

Day 6: A song that makes you want to dance
Radio - Santigold

Day 7: A song to drive to
Walking In The Wind - One Direction

Day 8: A song about drugs and/or alcohol
Habits - Tove Lo

"I got to stay high all the time to keep you off my mind...
Spent my days locked in a haze, trying to forget your face..."

Day 9: A song that makes you happy
That Feeling - We The Kings

Day 10: A song that makes you sad
Feelings - Up Dharma Down

Note: There is also a version featuring Paul Buchanan on the Capacities (2012) record and it is very reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and Sara Bareilles should they have collaborated which, I think, is stellar... if you're feeling extra (sad)

Day 11: A song that you never get tired of
My Hands - David Archuleta

"If everything would stop,
I'll listen for your heart to lead me right to you.."

Day 12: A song from you preteen years
All You Wanted - Michelle Branch

Day 13: One of your favourite 70's songs
Imagine - John Lennon (1971)

Day 14: A song that you would love to be played at your wedding
Quiet - Jason Mraz

"Empires rise, empires fall, will you be my constant through it all?"

Day 15: A song that is a cover by another artist
Written In The Stars - Julie Anne San Jose (originally by Tinie Tempah)

Day 16: One of your favourite classical songs
Hedwig's Theme (if you could consider this one a classic) or Canon in D Major (Johann Pachelbel)

Day 17: A song that you would sing a duet with on karaoke
Disenchanted - My Chemical Romance

Day 18: A song from the year you were born
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Day 19: A song that makes you think about life
World Spins Madly On - The Weepies

Day 20: A song that has many meanings to you
(Un)lost - The Maine

"Control what you can, confront what you can't and always remember... how lucky you are to have yourself."

Day 21: A song with a person's name on the title
John the Fisherman - Primus

Day 22: A song that moves you forward
Visions - Gabby Alipe

"I should've known"
"I could've tried it"
Won't let these words control me anymore.

Day 23: A song that you think everybody should listen to
Take Me Home - Jess Glynne

She is very underrated.

Day 24: A song by a band you wish were still together
There Is No Mathematics To Love and Loss - Anberlin

Still gutted for the breakup, though it's for the best.

Day 25: A song by an artist no longer living
Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Jeff Buckley

Gone too soon, bub.

Day 26: A song that makes you fall in love
Never Seen Anything (Quite Like You) - The Script

Day 27: A song that breaks your heart
When Love Is Not The Answer - Urbandub

If you think The Fight Is Over is heartbreaking, this one takes the cake.

Day 28: A song by an artist with a voice that you love
rEaR vIeW - Zayn

Day 29: A song that you remember from your childhood
25 Minutes - Michael Learns To Rock

Day 30: A song that reminds you of yourself

Here's to more badass music and appreciation of the music that we love.
Happy 2017.

April x

2016.

For the chapter that is about to end and the new stories that are about to unfold. For all the hardships and failures that serve as reminders of how much God trusts us that we may all overcome all of it. (So if it feels too much to handle, know that He believes in you THAT much.) For the adventures and life's sweet, little surprises. To the family, to the old friends, the keepers, the newest additions, the recurring characters, the ones I've let go, even the shitty ones that I chose to (stupidly but wholeheartedly) keep or those who might have hurt me... wherever in the group you might fit, I am grateful for you... for helping me be who I am now. 2016 has taught me to be adventurous, at the same time content and more appreciative of life.

Life isn't all roses and butterflies, but we have sunrise and rainbows. And lastly and most importantly through all of it, we have Him. Who can be against us? Today as the year ends, I choose to be grateful. I choose to love and to be hopeful.

It's time to turn the pages.

Cheers to 2017. I'm stoked for you. x

Christmas Party Fashion Hack 2016 (Look Fab For Less Than A Thousand Bucks)

I am admittedly not a fashionista. I dress for comfort and I don't give a shit as to what others may think (though it took a while for me to be able to say that; to be comfortable in my own skin, to be totally honest). I'd wear a skirt or a floral and loud-coloured trousers when I feel like it despite, you know, my size (thick arms/legs, all big) and uneven complexion. I just do me. Casual and laidback. Never would have I ever thought of blogging about fashion but I was pretty happy with my recent purchases that I cannot help but share it.

So we had our Christmas party a few days back with the Black and White theme. Most of my dresses are black/white as you just feel sexy in anything black, or may be that's just me so I did not have a hard time choosing a proper attire for the said gathering. I just needed the time to shop and so, off to the mall I went.

I opted for patterns instead of plain and laced ones this year, and a dress as simple as I would usually go.
2012. 2014.

What amazes me is that I only spent less than a thousand bucks to achieve the complete package I am going for. Here's the breakdown:

Dress (Landmark Trinoma) - 379.00Php
Grey belt with tussel (Landmark Trinoma) - 179.00Php
A simple black choker (Landmark Trinoma) - 29.00Php
Shiny beads/flower head accessory(Landmark Trinoma) - 129.00Php
Glittery grey heeled shoes - pre-owned (My sister's)
Pearl earrings - pre-owned

Mousse!!!
While some of my colleagues spent a handful for hair and makeup, I had mine done by a good friend and for free because she's offered and she is really the nicest. I purchased a nude lippie (Shade: 656) and an eyeshadow both from Maybelline, though especially for this occasion because they are on sale at 200.00Php and 150.00Php respectively. What a bargain, right?

With my good friend Rea. She's all magic!
I also had a late-blooming acne-attack mid this year and I am still nursing it at the moment. I haven't really taken selfies for some months (not that I am fond of taking selfies, anyway) but here's a very rare (arting-arte) selfie for the occasion:

All dolled up. Or... well. I tried.

And some fierce-faced solo at the venue because why not.

Fashwan. Keeping it light for the hols and the parties.
Merry Christmas!
