I was randomly Google-ing my daily Kim Soo Hyun fix one day when I came about this 대박 site which features some real good (however biased) K-Drama reviews. Of course, it has sparked up my interest and so I checked/read a few and it was so nice it has inspired me to blog this.
Knowing how I don't really do series a lot (I am a bummer, as I may have previously mentioned in my old posts) this is something that I don't usually do. To be honest, the last K-drama that I did like the most and was able to watch the most if not all the episodes was Full House with Rain and Song Hye Kyo on the lead and that felt like ages ago. Hahaha. I did watch Tree in Heaven and Snow White, Sweet Love because of Lee Wan, who's prior to knowing Kim Soo Hyun, is my long time bias. You see, I did not know a lot of Korean actors back then and it's not that i knew a lot of them now; I am not even aware of Lee Wan's current whereabouts. Not that we are related and that I should know lol but in another universe we are together in the past and now...and now.. i do not even know. (delusional. Ha. I'm just kidding.)
What I am trying to say is that I am not into mainstream actors/shows that much (and Kim Soo Hyun is huge and practically well-known anywhere now). Lee Wan is a good actor (at least in my eyes) but he is, sadly, not on a superstar status in Korea, which is for me, selfishly is a good thing because there is lesser competition with other fangirls (Hahaha my logical self is on a vacation, bear with me). I only watch K-dramas (the dubbed ones) on TV when it is on. I don't even bother to stay up late to watch Jang Geum, Jumong, and the likes no matter how great they are, as my friends would tell me. Most K-dramas are on the late primetime slot usually, is why. If it's in the afternoon I am either in school back then or in present time, working my arse out in the office so there is really not much of a chance to watch. The truth is, that is me to every TV series (not only K-dramas) in general.
It is not until My Love From The Star that I did bother to have the episodes downloaded so I can watch it whenever I feel the need to (read: miss my alien oppa). If you have endured reading this post up to this point, you can totally say that I am hooked with the awesomeness that is Kim Soo Hyun.
Note: It is actually The Walking Dead, the series that has started the whole watching-every-episode kind for me. It is one of those series that i did give a try mostly because the copies are readily available by friends and it is also a good watch. Unrelated but I just had to mention. MLFTS is the one that started it for me in the K-drama land.
He is just too talented to not get noticed. He fits and works hard for every role to a T. At present I have already seen The Thieves and Secretly, Greatly (films where he was in) and there is just too much passion in the way he acts. Making me appreciate him more than the good looks and sexy body that he apparently had. ;) I have not even seen his best performance (according to most friends) yet but I have started watching Moon Embracing The Sun and I will post something about it most likely when I am done.
Back to the main point, there are some interesting issues/themes that are mentioned in this k-drama review that I have read that I felt like giving my thoughts about it, too, not only my view on the said show, but of Kim Soo Hyun, reviews and K-dramas in general.
While it is nice to tackle the technicalities and stuff on reviews, these dramas (whether in films or in a series) are meant to bring us the "feels" (and money to the production lol). If it won't elicit such strong emotional connection with the viewers then all of it is pointless. Nobody would waste their time on it, oh, well except for die-hards, maybe.
We have to realise that these people act because of their passion for the craft (though the money compensation and fame come with it as well), to nail the role, to practically be in character no matter how hard that is.
We watch to be entertained. Thinking about it more, plot holes could also be the writers' way of getting us hooked but it should not be to the point of overanalysing. They leave us craving for more, yes. They leave us with a lot in the imagination, questions about the future, something for fan fiction to work on. We cannot expect full resolution of all the conflicts, yes? But it should satisfy our cravings for a good entertainment, at least.
My Love From The Star has its flaws, okay. There are things that are not resolved, issues that have been left out and yet why is it still good for me?
Because it gave us a relatable kind of love story. (Referring to the love Min Joon and Song Yi have, not the alien love cos apparently that is not possible, at least in our lifetime. But who knows?)
I respect it when people voice out their disappointments, I myself have some issues with the show as well. But see, it's like ranting about something that's done in the past that we cannot change. I personally think/don't need to be educated with the extra-terrestial beings and could not care less with the argument of if Min Joon is a baby or old alien on Earth whatsoever. But what I do care about is how he and Song Yi have found love that is worth keeping, worth risking your status, your life for. (That's what I meant with relatable).
The reincarnation arc maybe left out in the end, but I see it as their way of shifting the focus to the main theme (as I have figured recently) and that is to focus on the NOW; loving someone not because of who he was in the past or who will be in the future but for who he is now. And try to make every moment with that person count.
A nice example would be the epilogues at the end of each show which gives us a glimpse of the extended activities of our main characters. Some are cute. Some are funny and cringe-worthy. And some are enlightening, in the sense that it really tug strings in the heart. There are some in there which has showed what Do Min Joon has really done, swoon-worthy and sweet stuff of which we don't know if Song Yi is now even aware. But assuming she still does not know and yet her love is still unwavering is something. Love "now" and everything else is just details.
Gotta admire, too, how strong and vulnerable of the right amount the main female character has gone to be and how perfect Jeon Ji Hyun has portrayed the role. I just totally love how she's head over heels to the point of desperation at one time and still, there still is that self-respect that one should not lose even in the most trying times. And our girl nailed it!

The soundtrack is also great. The scoring somehow has enhanced each scenes, eliciting all the major emotions that is needed giving us all even more of the viewing pleasure as was simultaneously being handed out to us by the other aspects of the drama.

Now here's the part where I tell how words would not be enough to describe my love for Kim Soo Hyun. (Hehehe of course, I'm just kidding.)
The man has mad determination, that is all I know. And he has a knack of choosing the right projects, too (or at least the agency that he is in). He's gone through major controversies this year inasmuch as the fame that goes with the success of his previous show. But I am ever glad and somehow amused how he is able to get back with his detractors by doing what he does best, and that is through his rad acting and eventually bagging recognitions here and there (Award giving bodies!! Man, 2014 is really his year!)
What I like the most about this actor is his humility and drive to always give his best every single time. Does not matter if it just a cameo role, a TV commercial/endorsement stint or a huge project, he just always give it his all. He used to say on his every acceptance speech how he's ashamed and how he may not deserve everything that he's getting now, and he was all emotional on stage and stuff and that's where he really got me. "Until the day that I am confident enough to stand in from of you on this stage, I will strive and work harder. Please continue to watch me." Gotta love this man.
And guess that's what I'd do. ;)

End note: I still have a few blog drafts that I am yet to finish and publish (Kenshin, CN Blue related, spiritual gifts etc) but yeah. Hopefully I'd be on my writing mood sometime this week again. This had been so refreshing, knowing how busy the previous month was. More blog updates soon!
